How to read it

Practical talk — arrangements, work, what time, which place — is what anybody shares with anybody. Talk about your lives, and especially talk about how either of you is genuinely doing, costs something to start and almost never gets spent on people we feel nothing for.

Notice who does the drifting. If you keep steering toward the personal and they keep steering back to the practical, you have an answer, and it is not a cruel one. If they are the one who takes it there, that was a choice.

When it means nothing

Some people open up to strangers within ten minutes and it is a personality rather than a preference. And one deep conversation late at night is not a pattern. It is a late night.
